Turn Into A Sunrise, 2018
The first tapestry work ever made, Turn Into A Sunrise is a work that began a shift between worlds for Ryanne. It was the first moment of comfort between a world she knew, painting, with a world she had only ever dipped her toe into, textiles.
The cotton fabric was first hand-dyed through a unique soaking & dipping process she created herself. Raw wool yarn and embroidery is added in a seemingly random fashion, although every moment you see is precisely calculated.
These materials expressed in this manner are a direct reflection of Ryanne Florence herself, as each moment with a raw material is a moment you make a decision. Following each decision with another, all of Ryanne’s textile works express not only a time-based narrative, but a strong personality-based narrative as well. Turn Into A Sunrise is just the oldest of the family.
Turn Into A Sunrise was displayed in the Sheridan Student Showcase in Oakville, ON from Dec. 2019-Feb. 2020, as seen below.
