Turn into a sunset, 2019
The second tapestry work ever made, Turn Into A Sunset sets the tone for Ryanne that what she is making just feels right. Right in her hands, right in her mind, right in every way.
She was also right about the tapestries’ ability to display personality types. By the time Ryanne was finished Turn Into A Sunset and displayed both works for faculty critique at the annual Mixed Doubles Day in April 2019, it was like she immediately saw two different people. With their similarities in shape & texture, it bound them together, like a series, yet their colours & details defined them as two completely opposite sisters.
Turn Into A Sunset was a work that used the same hand-dyeing technique as the first tapestry Turn Into A Sunrise, and used merino wool yarn once again for the textured element. However, Turn Into A Sunset has screen printed details, rather than a painted element. Tree rings and coral motifs decorate the hand-dyed tapestry across the bottom like a landscape; and Ryanne was aiming to cast a narrative where we think of these beings as one, rather than plant & animal life that lives separate from one another. At one point in evolutionary history, they did. And still now, as they are defined in their natural environment, each one does ecologically affect another in our global biosphere.
Although Turn Into A Sunset may not be the oldest tapestry of the bunch, she is perceived as the wisest tapestry personality; the most in touch with Earth. It cannot be forgotten that Turn Into A Sunset was a pivotal moment in understanding how artistic changes make a unique impact.
