Vermilion Lake’S CALM, 2022
The first painting created post-graduation, Vermilion Lake’s Calm is a landscape with whimsical pinks, purples and blues.
Pink, purple and blue is one of the most prominent colour combinations that continuously show up in Ryanne’s work. To her, this combination feels ethereal because of its very limited occurrences in nature. At dusk or dawn, when these colours are most common in the sky, the world is at a different vibration and the world almost hovers still for a brief moment.
This work cemented two things for Ryanne; first, that pink, purple and blue were her colours, and second, that painting landscapes came naturally & quickly to her. A landscape of this size that used to take many hours, now only took three. When the perspective of the landscape is present in her mind’s eye, the landscape’s layers come to life naturally and quickly on the canvas.
This sparked a continuation of painting dreamlike landscapes for Ryanne for the following year to come.
