WATERCOLOUR SEA, 2018
WATERCOLOUR SEA is a painting that truly embodied freedom to explore both the physical techniques of watercolour paint layering and the mental freedom of painting a piece without an underlying sketch or plan. Things came about quite naturally and spontaneously in this work as I moved from the right side to the left, leaving myself at the end to create the mysterious eyes peering through the water.
The kelp forests of the Pacific Ocean are an ecosystem that I admire for their biodiversity, plentifulness and their regenerative properties. By adding numerous layers of fish and plant life, and a set of mysterious eyes, I wanted to suggest that the kelp forests are home to more than we may expect.
This piece is a work that seriously began my journey with watercolour paints, but it also began my journey discovering the colour palette that feels most inspiring to me. I was discouraged in university to use the bright palette that I love, but naturally embraced it after exposing myself to a greater variety of art and I returned to these colours I used years ago.
